Roof pitch finder app: measure roof pitch from the ground with your phone camera

Camera Mode is the Pitch Please answer to the roof you cannot reach. Point the camera at the roof, move the phone until the fixed on-screen guide follows the roof edge, and save a photo with the pitch, the degrees, and the guide line drawn on it. It is one of three ways to measure roof pitch, and the only one that needs neither a ladder nor a level.

How Camera Mode works

Switch to Camera Mode and hold the phone in landscape.
Stand where you have a clear view of the roof edge you want, square to it, and point the camera at it.
Rotate and tilt the phone until the fixed on-screen guide lies along the roof edge you are measuring. The guide itself does not move.
Watch the stability indicator. When the reading has settled, save. The photo is written with the guide line, the pitch or slope value, and the degrees on it.

The app reads the tilt of the device from its motion sensors, not the image, and reports it as X:12 with degrees in Imperial, or as percent slope with degrees in International.

Camera Mode or Direct Mode

Pitch Please ships both because every roof is a different problem. Direct Mode measures the phone itself resting on the surface. Camera Mode measures a guide you line up by eye. That difference decides which one to reach for.

Getting a stable reading from the ground

Stand square to the edge

You want the roof edge to read as a clean line across the screen. An angled view of the edge is the main source of a wrong reading in Camera Mode.

Pick a clean edge

A straight run of fascia, gutter, or rake with nothing in front of it. Trees, wires, and a neighbor's roof in the frame make the line harder to place.

Hold still and wait

The stability indicator tells you when the sensors have settled. Save after it goes stable, not while the phone is still moving.

Check the reading settled

Wait for the stability indicator before you save. A reading captured while the phone is still moving is not the same as one captured after it settled.

Frequently asked questions

How does a phone camera measure roof pitch from the ground?

Camera Mode shows a live view with a fixed alignment guide. You move and rotate the phone until the guide sits along the roof edge you are measuring, and the app reads the tilt of the device from its motion sensors. The guide does not move on its own and the app does not measure the image itself. The result shows as X:12 with degrees in Imperial, or as percent slope with degrees in International.

Does the pitch get drawn on the photo?

Yes. The saved photo includes the guide line, the pitch or slope value, the degree reading, and the stability state, baked into the image so the number travels with the proof.

How accurate is Camera Mode compared to Direct Mode?

Direct Mode measures the phone itself resting on the surface, so it is the more repeatable of the two when you can reach the roof. Camera Mode depends on how well you line the guide up with the edge, so stand square to the roof line and wait for the stability indicator before you save.

Do I need to stand a certain distance from the house?

There is no fixed distance. You need a clear, unobstructed view of the roof edge you are measuring. Keep the phone steady and square to that edge, and let the reading settle before saving.
