What is Pitch Please?

Pitch Please is a roof pitch measurement app for iPhone and Android from GDK Digital LLC. It reads slope from your phone's motion sensors. Imperial, the default, shows an X:12 pitch with the angle in degrees; International switches to slope units. You pick one in Settings. It can also save a photo with the reading drawn on the image.

The usual way to get a roof pitch is to climb up with a level and a tape measure, or to squint at it from the driveway and guess. The first is slow and puts someone on a ladder. The second throws off material orders, estimates, and claim documentation. Pitch Please is the small tool in between: a reading in seconds, a photo you can attach to a file, and no equipment beyond the phone you already carry.

If you have searched for a roof pitch gauge, a roof slope finder, an inclinometer app for roofing, or a digital clinometer, this is that tool, with the roofing units built in. Instead of giving you a bare angle to convert by hand, it reports the pitch the way a roofing crew actually writes it.

Two ways to take a reading

Every roof is a different problem. Sometimes you can put a hand on the surface, and sometimes you are standing in the yard. Pitch Please ships both modes.

Direct Mode

Rest the phone on the slope itself and read the angle straight from the device sensors, the way you would use a digital inclinometer or clinometer. Hold it in landscape with the long edge in line with the fall of the roof. Direct Mode saves a screenshot of the measurement screen.

Camera Mode

Point the camera at the roof and match the live alignment guide to the roof line. Useful when you cannot safely reach the surface. The saved photo includes the guide line, the pitch or slope value, and the degree reading baked into the image.

Imperial or International

Imperial is the default and reads out as an X:12 pitch with the angle in degrees. International switches the reading to slope units. You choose one system in Settings; the app shows that one.

Calibration

Calibrate on a known flat surface before you measure for the most repeatable results. Recalibrate if the device was dropped, updated, or moved between very different environments.

How to measure roof pitch with your phone

  1. Install Pitch Please from the App Store or Google Play and grant camera, photo, and motion access when prompted.
  2. Calibrate on a surface you know is flat, such as a level floor or a countertop.
  3. Pick your mode: Direct Mode if you can reach the slope, Camera Mode if you are reading it from a distance.
  4. Hold the phone in landscape and align its long edge, or the on-screen guide, with the direction the roof falls.
  5. Read the pitch as X:12, in degrees, and as a percent slope on the same screen.
  6. Save the photo so the measurement stays attached to the image for your estimate, report, or claim file.

Roof pitch to degrees conversion chart

Roof pitch is written as rise over run, where the run is always 12 inches. A 6:12 pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal travel, which is 26.6 degrees, or a 50 percent slope. Pitch Please shows the reading for whichever unit system you have set, so here is the full conversion reference on paper, covering common residential slopes through the steep-slope range up to 24:12.

The last column is the pitch multiplier, also called the roof pitch factor or slope factor. Multiply the flat footprint area by it to get the actual sloped roof area: a 2,000 square foot footprint at 6:12 is 2,000 × 1.1180, or about 2,236 square feet of roof. The multiplier is reference math for estimating, not a reading the app takes.

What is a roof pitch multiplier?

The roof pitch multiplier, also called the pitch factor or slope factor, converts flat footprint area into actual sloped roof area. Multiply the footprint by the multiplier for that pitch: 2,000 square feet at 6:12 is 2,000 times 1.1180, or about 2,236 square feet of roof. It is reference math for estimating, not a reading the app takes.

What counts as a steep-slope roof?

Roofing convention treats anything above 3:12 as steep-slope and 3:12 or below as low-slope, which is what drives material and installation requirements. Most residential roofs land between 4:12 and 12:12. Mansard, Victorian, Tudor, and some commercial gable designs run well past that, up to 24:12, which is 63.4 degrees.

Which devices does Pitch Please run on?

Pitch Please runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 16.4 or later, and on Android phones and tablets. It is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play only.

Is Pitch Please accurate enough for engineering or code decisions?

No. Pitch Please is a field reference and documentation tool for fast, repeatable readings and photo records. Verify final code, engineering, safety, or construction decisions with the required professional instruments and your local requirements.

Does Pitch Please need an account or an internet connection?

No. Measurement runs on the device using its own sensors and camera. There is no GDK Digital account to create in order to take a reading. See the Pitch Please privacy policy for how camera, photo, and sensor access are handled.

Can I still download the Pitch Please APK from this site?

No. The direct APK download was retired when Pitch Please shipped on Google Play. Install it from Google Play or the Apple App Store so you get signed builds and automatic updates.
